Swim Lesson Levels

We have three levels of swim classes, each with a certain set of skills needed to graduate to the next level. These are the three levels with all of their necessary skills:

Tadpole

  • Blow bubbles for 3 seconds
  • Submerge mouth, nose, and eyes
  • Pick up submerged object at arm’s length 2 times
  • Maintain front float for 5 seconds with support of noodle
  • Recover from front float
  • Maintain back float with ears in the water for 5 seconds with support of noodle
  • Recover from back float
  • Bob 10 times to chin
  • Flutter kick on front
  • Flutter kick on back
  • Arm movements (ice cream scoops)
  • Turn over front to back
  • Turn over back to front
  • Discuss water safety rules; Recognize swimmer in trouble and demonstrate help techniques
  • Safety exit skills; enter unassisted, walk out five steps, bob to chin 5 times, and exit safely

Whales

  • Jump in to five feet from the side
  • Retrieve object from chest deep water; head submerged
  • From side of diving well, headfirst entry on knees
  • Bob 20 times submerged
  • Tread water for 2 minutes, recover float 1 minute
  • Elementary backstroke (soldier, chicken, airplane, glide) with frog kick length of 2 ft area
  • Freestyle to slide
  • Backstroke to slide
  • Side stroke length of 2 ft area with scissor kick
  • Breaststroke length of 2 ft area
  • Confident in deep water
  • Discuss water safety rules; Recognize swimmer in trouble, demonstrate help techniques, and effectively demonstrates safety around pool area

Dolphins

  • Jump in to 12 ft area from side
  • Alternate breathing
  • Standing dive from board
  • Long shallow dive in diving well
  • Breaststroke to slide
  • Side stroke to slide
  • Elementary backstroke to slide
  • Underwater swim 3 body lengths
  • Freestyle across pool (3 ft) down and back
  • Backstroke across pool (3 ft) down and back
  • Demonstrate front turn
  • Demonstrate back turn
  • Tread water 8 min/rest 1 min (Can be done in 4 min increments)
  • Discuss water safety rules; Recognize swimmer in trouble, demonstrate help techniques, and effectively demonstrates safety around pool area and safety when diving
